DRAWING + PAINTING CLASSES: LINE: GESTURE

Gesture is a quick, all-encompasing overview of forms in their wholeness. Once you develop the skill of gestural rendering, you will be using it primarily for structural studies as well as in your thumbnail compositional studies. When approaching gesture, it is useful to consider structure versus detail, as your goal will be to quickly record overall form, without focusing on and laboring over surface detail.

Types of gesture:

A. MASS GESTURE-

B. MASS + LINE GESTURE-

C. LINE GESTURE-

D. SCRIBBLED LINE GESTURE-

E. SUSTAINED LINE GESTURE-

Please refer to the definitions in your drawing notes included in both your syllabus, and in the earlier blog entry below.

We will start exploring gesture, using graphite pencils, graphite sticks and charcoal pencils and compressed charcoal.
