PAINTING CLASS: Materials List

PAINTING MATERIALS LIST

Note: This is a list of the minimum amounts and types of supplies you will need.
All of the materials on the list are required for successfully completing this course and you must acquire them.


Paint: (Acrylic, Liquitex; Do not buy Winsor Newton Galeria, Liquitex Basics, or Utrecht Yellows, or Utrecht Cerulean Blue. Also, don’t purchase anything with the word “HUE” on the label. Try to purchase all the same brand of paint. Note, if you buy the wrong paint, most stores will NOT take it back, and I will ask you to repurchase the correct paint)


-Hansa Yellow Light (PY3)

-Cadmium Yellow Light (PY35)

-Acra Magenta (PR122) or Quinacridrone Magenta (PR122)

-Cadmium Red Light (PR108)

-Cerulean Blue (PB36)

-Ultramarine Blue (PB29)

-Titanium White (PW6) Large Tube

-Ivory Black (PBK9) Large Tube



Brushes: (Note: You may specialize your brushes to suit your needs)

-Synthetic Sable (Sablette) 1” or ½” flat—I prefer the 1” if you can afford it; Small Round #2 or #4


Painting Supports:

-Bristol Board (pad), 11 x 14” 100lb. (smooth)

-Hot Press Illustration Board (Nielsen Bainbridge, 80lb), 15 x 20”: 5 sheets

-Canvas Paper Pad, 16 x 20” minimum (Blick Studio)


Additional Supplies:

-Tackle box: plastic, large enough to hold brushes and paints

-Portfolio (large enough to carry projects; 18 x 21” or larger)

-Brush holder/carry case (to preserve the condition of the bristles)

-Sketchbook: 9” x 12” or larger (used to develop images)

-Ruler (rubber or cork-backed); 12 or 18 inches

-Cling wrap (used to cover your palette when not in use)

- Tape: Scotch brand Painter’s Tape – 3-M’s Safe Release Tape is a suggestion; ½” x 60 yards (note: do not use artist’s tape or any tape with high-tack; must be low-tack and removable)

-Paper palette pad (at least 12”x16”)

-Palette knife- at least one straight, single blade, plastic

-Small X-Acto knife with replacement blades; Retractable utility knife with replacement blades

-Color wheel (for mixing): any will do

-Backboard- masonite or wood, to tape canvas paper onto

-Soap: The Masters Brush Cleaner and Preserver (small)
